Who invented Grappa?

Who invented Grappa?
A population: The Italians!

In fact, the Scuola Medica Salernitana was born in Italy; from the year 1000 onwards, it spread the distillation culture all along the peninsula.

In 1532 this important book, “De arte conficendi aquam vitae”, was published by the medic from Padua Michele Savonarola, who explained how to produce the spirit out of wine and pomace. The Poli Grappa Museum preserves a very rare copy.

To reach the contemporary definition of the word Grappa, we must reach 1989; that year, as per the Italian law, the main feature of Grappa was finally defined, namely it must be obtained distilling directly the grape’s skin: the pomace.

This makes it a unique spirit in the whole world, as it is the only one obtained distilling a solid raw material, and it is distilled exclusively in Italy.

Buona Grappa, everyone!
