Grappa protected in China and Singapore
Good news from the East about the protection of the Geographical Indication Grappa.
Two years after the agreement between China and the European Union on the list of the respective Geographical Indications (I.G.) to be protected, the bilateral agreement that will come into force towards the end of 2020 has finally been concluded.
The agreement guarantees the protection from imitations and usurpations of 100 European geographical indications (IG) in China and 100 Chinese 100 in the EU. Following the conclusion of the negotiations, the list of the respective geographical indications was published: for Italy there are: Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, some denominations of origin of wines among which Asti, Barbaresco, Barolo, Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti, Conegliano Valdobbiadene and Grappa.
The IG Grappa was therefore granted total protection and without the provision of any transitional phasing-out period; therefore, our GI will be immediately protected when the agreement comes into force.
The agreement will now have to go through the statutory audit and be ratified by the end of 2020.
The EU-Singapore trade agreement has also been approved by EU member states, which provides for Singapore to remove all remaining EU product tariffs, streamline procedures for trade agreements between companies and the extension of the legal protection of 138 food and drink products with geographical indications.
AssoDistil, the Association of Italian Distillers, with its direct intervention has requested and obtained the protection of the IG Grappa that from the entry into force of the agreement will be protected against any usurpation (see annex 10 °, point 143).
